Enjoy local food, drink and live music in beautiful surroundings at Groves Summer Fair later this month. Groves Nurseries in Bridport is holding a summer fair on Saturday, July 27 at their nursery on West Bay Road. The event is free and open to everyone and will celebrate local crafts and food, with visitors also enjoying live music from the Skarlatans.
The event will also see the launch of their own handcrafted “Mr Groves’ Violet Gin”. Flavoured with Clive Groves’ Bridport-grown violets to be distilled on the day. The perfect tipple for Summer. Groves will be working with Devon Distillery’s Still on the Move named ‘Ginny’, a 1973 VW Pickup with a beautiful Italian copper still called 'Prosperity.' Mr Groves’ Violet gin should be ready around 3pm so come along for the first tasting.
The violets used in the gin come from a collection of violets started by my Clives father Charles William Groves. He noticed that many of the older growers mainly in the Dawlish area of Devon, were either retiring from growing or passing away in the late 60s early 70s. Violets were losing their popularity as a cut flower but Clive was collecting rare varieties from around the world and breeding new ones. Groves violets holds National Collection status by Plant Heritage and now have the only collection of viola odorata and parma violets in the country. Groves Nurseries probably has the largest collection of violets in the world so it seems fitting that they should have their own gin given violet gin is totally on trend for the Summer.
There will be a range of stall holders on the day, including West Milton and Dorset Nectar Cider, Cherrytree preserves, Ford Farm cheesemakers, Dorset Spice Shed, Hot Hound accessories, The Rhubarb Candle Company, West Dorset Soap and many more.
It will also be an opportunity to taste Mr Groves’ Violet Gin homebrew, distilled onsite, for the first time from 3pm. The summer fair will take place in the rose garden in front of Ivy House from 10am to 4pm and it is free to attend.
