Make your Own Hygge Glogg for Christmas

We thought we’d share our recipe for a delicious Hygge version of Glühwein, our Danish Glogg. It’s the perfect drink to sip in winter if you’re having any outdoor celebrations sitting by your cosy Kadai firebowl.

It’s a spicy, hot red wine that’ s guaranteed to keep you warm and get the festivities underway so best not served to children or not to anyone with a nut allergy as it contains almonds.

mulled wine

All you need (for about 10 people) is

100g raisins

Large orange studded with cloves (about 8)

A large wine glass of Aquavit (flavoured spirit from Scandinavia) if you can’t get it use brandy, port or rum

2 bottles of red wine (the better the wine the better the Glogg.)

Zest of half a lemon

2 cinnamon sticks

½ teaspoon cardamom pods

2 tablespoons of brown sugar

100g slivered almonds

Small piece crystalised ginger

Place the cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, orange with cloves, crystalized ginger, lemon and sugar in the aquavit (port, brandy or rum) and red wine for all the flavours to mix preferably overnight or for at least 1-2 hours before serving. Then gently heat the liquid on the stove but do not allow it to boil. Run the wine through a sieve into a serving jug to remove the spices, and then add the raisins and almonds to the wine.

Serve warm in mugs or glasses, with a spoon in each to scoop up the nuts and fruit. Enjoy!
