Autumn Lawncare

Autumn LawncareLate summer/early autumn is the perfect time to take a look at your lawn for signs of summer wear & tear then treat as necessary as any treatment you apply has time to take effect before temperatures fall and growth stops.

Looking after your lawn now will put it in great shape for next spring so here are a few suggestions best done when the grass is moist, not wet or dry.

  • Moss Control – your first job will be to kill any moss with a liquid or granular product.
  • Lawn Scarification - scarify your lawn with a garden rake, or if you have a large lawn a powered  scarifier this will remove all the debris that has built up like moss and thatch (organic matter) and then give it a cut after.
  • If you’ve had to treat moss then scarify 2 weeks later
  • Lawn Aeration – lawns compact with use over the summer so they need spiking to let air in and improve drainage. This can be done with a simple garden fork or more easily with any of the wide range of lawn aerators for sale or hire.
  • Over seeding – once you’ve aerated and scarified the lawn it will be in a perfect condition for new grass seed to establish. Cut the lawn a little shorter than usual then spread seed with a spreader at about 10-25g/m2.
  • Top Dressing - apply a layer of mixed sand/soil/peat to the lawn to improve drainage and promote growth and also to help prevent thatch build up
  • Fertilising – finally apply a lawn fertiliser to help maintain the lawns health in winter and give it a head start in spring.
