Here are our ten easy tips to make you very proud of your outdoor space when friends drop round this summer.

1. Tidy Up

Cut back tired overgrown plants and be ruthless and throw away then replace any you just don’t like anymore. Roses are always a good bet in summer gardens as they will bloom till autumn.

Tidy up path edges with stylish edging stones, put new gravel down on tired paths and give your lawn a makeover with Aftercut for instant greening.

2. Add a splash of colour

Bold vibrant plants in new pots will instantly brighten up your patio. It really is amazing how you can transform a tired garden with a collection of beautifully planted pots and planters in different shapes and sizes. For even more colour take the paint brush to your garden furniture or shed to give them a new lease of life.

3. Plant climbers

Hide ugly fences, sheds and buildings with climbing roses and clematis. They may take a while to establish but it’s worth the wait

4. Design a vertical garden

If you’re short of space, think of going up as well as out. Use a wall or fence space to plant a vertical garden and not just with flowers try herbs, tumbler tomatoes and strawberries as well.

5. Make over your beds and borders

There’s still time to fill in gaps with summer bedding or to give borders a tweak by widening and adding some curves and planting things like helenium, dahlias and rudbeckias that will flower in August

6. Weed and Mulch

Keep on top of weeds as they will be really growing now so if you haven’t done it already add a layer of mulch to your flower borders to suppress them

7. Create an outdoor room

It’s amazing how just moving a table and chairs round can make a difference and they really should be the centre of your outdoor entertaining. There’s a fantastic choice of really comfortable sofas and armchairs now in modern materials like rattan and because they’re waterproof they can be left out all summer making it easy to design your cosy outdoor seating area.

8. Spread some light

As darkness falls, your garden can become a magical space if you light it imaginatively: string fairy lights around the patio, solar lights through bushes and along pathways.

9. Turn the cooker off

It’s so easy to barbeque nowadays especially with gas models that offer instant cooking so you’ll find you really do use your garden more than ever and not just for entertaining friends but regular summer meals with the family.

10. Keep warm

Rustic fire bowls like the Kadai are all the rage at the moment making a stylish centrepiece for the garden by day as well as a hub of warmth and light in the evening.
