Children Grow with Groves Garden Centre

This month sees the launch of a new school’s garden project in West Dorset for Children’s National Gardening Week. Groves Nurseries and Garden Centre will be supplying local schools with seed packets and expertise on growing flowers and vegetables in their school’s gardens.

“Groves are delighted to be involved with local schools in this initiative to get younger generations into gardening and benefiting from all that nature and ‘grow your own’ has to offer” says Charlie Groves.

National Children's Gardening Week takes place every year at the end of May which means it’s a great time to plant the pumpkin and sunflower seeds supplied by Groves. There’s a huge amount of evidence for the benefits gardening has in schools. It improves pupils’ concentration, creativity, knowledge and understanding of the world, and above all it’s fun!

Gardening covers so many parts of the curriculum, maths, science, art, physical exercise and very importantly, team work.  It is the perfect vehicle for hands on learning.

Local Headteacher Claire Staple from Burton Bradstock Primary School is also excited about the gardening campaign which will carry on until harvest time in the Autumn

“We just got access to the rectory gardens next door which have some lovely planting plots in which the children can grow things. I can’t wait for the children to see their produce growing. We might even get some children eating more vegetables!”

Groves Nurseries in Bridport and Little Groves in Beaminster are hosting a continuing series of in-store children’s events. This includes a free Treasure Trail during this May half term break at their Bridport Garden Centre with a Gardening Hamper to be won. There will also a Pumpkin Party in their Ivy House restaurant during Autumn harvest time with carving competitions using the children’s own grown pumpkins.
