We’re very proud to hold the National Collection of sweet Violets (Viola odorata) and they’re flowering now and looking and smelling gorgeous. If you’d like to create your very own collection in your garden then this is the time to plant. Take a look at all our Violets with lots of different ones to choose from including one of our favourites Diana Groves a gold medal winner and named after Mrs Groves! Plus a few more of our many beauties below.
Violets enjoy cool, damp humus soils. Their natural habitat is in shady hedgerows or banks sharing similar conditions to the wild strawberry and primrose so try to imitate these conditions when planting in the garden.
Dappled shade under deciduous trees and shrubs is the ideal position where they will be able to avoid hot, dry summer conditions, but will be exposed to the winter sun which will encourage flowering.
