Local Majorettes Fundraising for Trip to Historic Floral Carnival
Bridport based Port Bredy Allstars majorettes hope to raise more funds this Saturday, when they perform at Groves Nurseries in Bridport, for their trip to the historic Battle of Flowers carnival being held in Jersey in August.
Groves’ managing director Charlie Groves said “It’s a great honour for Port Bredy Allstars to be invited to take part as they will be the only troupe there. They need to fundraise to meet the travel costs and so we thought that our customers would love to see them perform and, as they will be representing the town of Bridport at such an iconic event, offer some support.”
The event has taken place in Jersey for over 100 years and is one of the largest floral carnivals in Europe. It gets its name because in the early days the floral floats were mostly horse-drawn and tradition at the time was for flowers and petals to be torn from the float and thrown to girls in the crowd, in the hope that one would be thrown back.
The Port Bredy Allstars, who will be in two of the colourful parades in Jersey, will be performing at Groves Nurseries between 11am and 2pm on Saturday July 9th so if you would like to see one of their dazzling performances and help the troupe get to Jersey come along.
