Description
Dwarf French Bean seeds "Safari" is a late maturing type with strong vigorous plant habit. It produces very fine pods which are carried high on the bush. The pods are round, stringless, straight and dark green, being about 12cm in length.
Safari is sometimes known as Kenyan Beans and has a high level of disease resistance. This family of beans is frost tender and cannot be sown until the weather has warmed up.
When to Sow: April to June.
Where to Sow: Early sowings can be made under glass at a temperature of 16°C, sow into 8cm (3in) pots or modular trays filled with seed sowing compost. Outside sowings can be made from May onwards into the growing site 5cm (2in) deep. Sow 2-3 seeds every 20cm (8in) apart with rows spaced 45cm (18in) apart.
What to do next: Seedlings sown under glass should be gradually hardened off before planting outside in late May to the above spacing, once all risk of frost has past. Direct sown seedlings can be thinned out as required. Water regularly during dry weather.
Maturity: July to September.
Handy Tip: Sow small amounts at regular intervals to ensure a continuous supply of beans throughout the season.
Nutritional Value: Good source of folic acid and vitamins A and K.
