Which lawnmower?
A good lawnmower makes your lawn a pleasure to look after. When you've got the right machine for the job, great results follow naturally: a well-mown lawn is like a green velvet carpet for your garden, setting off your plants and providing you with a tranquil open space to chill out and relax.
As a basic guide, this is what to expect from the different types of mower available in our garden centre. All come in both petrol and electric models.
Cylinder: If you want a bowling-green lawn, this is the one to go for. Cylinder mowers have a barrel-like arrangement of blades which cut grass incredibly finely: a roller on the back creates stripes in the lawn.
Rotary: A good general-purpose mower, with the blades on a spinning disc to cut efficiently and smoothly, with minimum fuss. It won't mow as close as a cylinder, but copes with uneven lawns much more easily.
Hover: The biggest-selling mowers in the country, hover mowers float just above the ground and are very easy to manoeuvre. Electric hover mowers are light and ideal for smaller lawns. Petrol hovers are heavier but more powerful.
