Carpinus betulus/ Grow in any soil, except very dry. Sun or partial shade.
Common hornbeam is deciduous with bright green leaves and hop-like catkins in the autumn. Can be used as part of a mixed native hedge, or on its own as a formal hedge. A good choice as an alternative to beech. RHS AGM.
Plant out: 30-45cm (1-1.5ft)
Maintenance: Prune in late summer to help retain the last flush of leaves for as long as possible into the autumn.
